The sum of parts can be greater than the whole as this older home demonstrates.
A succession of owners expanded the house with multiple additions and, over time, the architectural mass overwhelmed the approach to the house.
The owner, wanting to preserve the rambling informality of the house, agreed to a landscape renovation plan that would reconfigure the front walk, foundation plantings, and driveway courtyard.
The plan introduced simplified array of features to create unity in a compact space: foundation plantings were replaced with lower growing materials along with a box bordered front walk to maintain the connection between the house with driveway courtyard. Then as counterpoint, a ‘green fence’ — a freestanding apple cordon, was placed to suggest both a separation between zones and to offer a hospitable walk through an orchard before a welcomed arrival at the front door.
